Reaction Torque 101

Torque, a rotational force, is crucial in countless mechanical systems. Testing professionals and engineers rely on torque transducers to measure this force accurately. These sensor devices convert the mechanical input of torque into a measurable electrical output signal.

Reaction torque transducers measure torque extremely well in static applications with limited or undesirable rotation. Unlike rotary transducers, which rotate with the system, reaction transducers remain stationary.

A reaction torque transducer uses strain gage technology. These sensitive components deform slightly when subjected to torque. This deformation alters the strain gage’s electrical resistance, which is then measured using a Wheatstone bridge circuit. The bridge circuit converts the change in resistance into a proportional electrical signal, typically in millivolts per volt (mV/V). This signal can then be read and interpreted by instrumentation to determine the applied torque.

Reaction torque transducers offer exceptional accuracy in static and low-rotation applications. Reaction types are cost-effective. Their static, stationary nature simplifies integration into test setups and existing systems. They are available in various configurations for diverse applications, including shaft, flange, and square drive.
