Interface Bending Beams, Load Cell FAQs, Data Logging, Terms, and More

View this email in your browser

Bending beam load cells are versatile, cost-effective devices for many weighing and force measurement applications. These miniature load cells are compact, making them ideal for small testing setups, embedding into machines or products, and continuous performance monitoring.

Bending beam load cells are utilized in various industries and applications, including scales, medical devices, industrial process controls, robotic systems, packaging machinery, and civil engineering projects. These industrious sensors are commonly used in labs to measure smaller force capacities for R&D and product development.

INTERFACE BENDING BEAM LOAD CELLS

The bending beam load is typically quantified by its rated output, the signal level at full load. The total physical bending at full load is known as deflection at rated output (RO). When evaluating test requirements, note that a load cell must operate safely within its safe overload limit to maintain accuracy. Learn more in Discovering Bending Beam Load Cell Use
Cases
.

Interface’s most popular standard bending beam load cells include:

MB Miniature Beam Load Cell, a compression-only load cell, is used for various low-capacity applications. It is offered in a range of standard capacities of 5 to 250 lbf.
MBI Overload Protected Miniature Beam Load Cell is available in standard capacities from 2 to 10 lbf. It is fatigue-rated and offers better resistance to off-axis loads.
MBP Overload Protected Miniature Beam Load Cell is available in models that range from 2 to 10 lbf. It provides greater overload protection (2.5-10lbf ±1000% of full-scale capacity, 100 N ±500% of full-scale capacity).

Review the core specifications, such as rated output and safe overload, to confidently select and integrate bending beam load cells that meet your application requirements. Understanding the limits of any load cell is crucial. As you review the dimensions and capacities, take a moment to review all the key specifications.

ENGINEERING TIP: A shear beam like Interface’s SSB Sealed Beam Load Cell might look like a bending beam, but there’s a crucial difference. Shear beam cells have a large hole bored partially through each side, leaving only a thin, vertical web in the center. A bending beam cell has a large hole that extends entirely through it. Bending force is an outside force that causes an object to bend. Shear force acts across the cross-section. The Interface Mini Selection Guide is a valuable place to start to review your
options.

RESOURCE! Interface offers a new Bending Beam Cheat Sheet to help you review terms and abbreviations. This cheat sheet is available in our ForceEDU Resource Hub. If you need help making a selection, contact us with any questions or to request a quote.

LOAD CELL FAQS AND TIPS

A load cell is a high-precision instrument. Its performance depends directly on its physical integrity. A reliable quality load cell must be made with appropriate materials, installed correctly, and regularly maintained to ensure accurate measurement results.
Based on common load cell FAQs, Interface experts provide answers in our latest technical article, Load Cell Design FAQs and Engineering Tips. Learn more about these frequently asked questions regarding:

Evaluating Performance Specifications
Troubleshooting Zero Drift and Temperature
Installation Strategy Starts with Orientation
Managing Crosstalk in Multi-Axis Sensor Applications

THREE DATA LOGGING NON-NEGOTIABLES

How are you managing the data from your sensors? When you decide which measurement device you intend to use, the next question is, how will you collect and store the data? In Data Logging for Validation, Analysis, and Compliance, learn the non-negotiables of data logging, review questions to define your exact requirements, and review a list of data logging indicators available from Interface.

Often, the actual value of critical test and measurement applications across industries lies in selecting the proper instrumentation to capture data from your sensor technologies. It is not always in the momentary reading on a digital display, but in the logged, archived, and analyzed history of performance. Data loggers are the essential bridge that turns raw physical signals into actionable, traceable intelligence. Use the Interface Instrumentation Selection Guide to aid in your tool evaluation.

FORCE & TORQUE MEASUREMENT TERMINOLOGY

Force and torque measurement rely on precise technical vocabulary. Understanding these terms is crucial for selecting, installing, and correctly interpreting data from load cells and torque transducers. Terms like side load, moment, and ultimate overload are used to define critical boundaries that determine your sensor’s accuracy, lifespan, and safety. Misunderstanding even one of these concepts can lead to catastrophic failure or, worse, years of unreliable data.

Interface provides must-know terms for load, capacity, and types of force in Seven Essential Terms in Force and Torque Measurement. For each definition, we include a test-and-measurement example to illustrate. Understanding these terms ultimately ensures the integrity and reliability of your entire measurement system, regardless of scale.

REMINDER! The ultimate resource for technical terms and understanding force measurement is our Interface Load Cell Guide. You can get a free copy of the online book here.

ASSEMBLY EXCELLENCE REQUIRES PRECISION SENSORS

Manufacturing assembly is a critical process of combining individual components into a finished product. In fact, it is often the key stage for operational success. Interface transducers and instrumentation form the backbone of quality control across many critical assembly applications, from press-fitting operations to end-of-line equipment monitoring. The future of assembly depends on the data from these sensors.

Automation and innovation are driving unprecedented gains in manufacturing efficiency, quality, and workplace safety, and the essential ingredients are precise measurement sensors. With ongoing advancements in assembly AI, robotics, and automation, Interface’s products are necessary for testing, monitoring, and controlling assembly machines at every stage of production. Sensors enable immediate feedback for quick adjustments and prevent costly downtime errors. Read Assembly Excellence in Manufacturing.
