3-Axis Load Cells, Crosstalk, Data Sheets, Stress vs Strain, and Esports

Advancements and the complexity of testing requirements increasingly require significantly more data-rich analysis. Interface’s expanding line of multi-axis sensors fits the needs of complex measurement assessments.

Interface 3-Axis Load Cells are valuable multi-axis sensors engineered to simultaneously measure forces along three mutually perpendicular axes in tension and compression. This design, which requires no mathematical manipulation for standard 3-axis force measurements (Fx, Fy, Fz), also minimizes eccentric loading effects and crosstalk between axes.

Available in capacities from 2 N to 1 MN (.45 lbf to 225K lbf), each axis provides a unique mV/V output because each signal directly corresponds to a specific measurement direction. This is achieved by combining three single-axis sensors, each with its own full Wheatstone bridge, into a single, compact unit.

INTERFACE 3-AXIS LOAD CELLS

Multi-axis sensors offer significant advantages in test and measurement, including a more complete picture for analysis. The Interface 3-Axis multi-axis sensors consolidate measurement signals and save test space. They can quantify forces or moments, providing more data, more understanding, and faster results. Here are the top selections for Interface standard 3-Axis Load Cells:

3A40 3-Axis Load Cell – Force: 2 N to 50 N
3A60A 3-Axis Force Load Cells – Force: 10 N to 500 N
3A120 3-Axis Force Load Cells – Force: 50 N to 5 kN
3A160 3-Axis Force Load Cells – Force: 2 kN to 50 kN
3A300 3-Axis Force Load Cells – Force: 50 kN to 200 kN
3A400 3-Axis Force Load Cells – Force: 500 kN
3AR100 Round 3-Axis Load Cells – Force: 2kN/10kN, 5kN/20kN, 10kN/30kN, 20kN/60kN
3AR125 Round 3-Axis Load Cells – Force: 30kN/90kN, 40kN/120kN
3AR155 Round 3-Axis Load Cells – Force: 50kN/200kN, 100kN/300kN

TECH TALK: DIVERGENCE IN FORCE MEASUREMENT STRAIN VS STRESS

In material science and structural testing, stress and strain are often discussed in tandem, yet they represent fundamentally different physical events. The distinction becomes vital in test and measurement when evaluating different material classes. The relationship between stress and strain underpins sensor selection.

Stress testing evaluates an object’s maximum strength, helping to pinpoint any weaknesses or flaws in its design. In these scenarios, the test system maintains a specific load or pressure, regardless of how much the material deforms.
Strain testing provides data that aid in material selection, optimize designs, and ensure the safety and performance of products across multiple industries. This requires a system that moves at a constant rate of deformation.

CONTROLLING CROSSTALK IN MULTI-AXIS SYSTEMS

Crosstalk is rarely the result of a single failure, but rather the accumulation of small physical and electrical interactions. Minute deviations in a sensor’s symmetry or in the orientation of its internal sensing elements can cause a vertical load to induce a slight bending moment. Instrumentation strategies for error reduction, which start by selecting the right signal conditioner, are as critical as the sensor design itself. The BX8-HD15 BlueDAQ Series Data Acquisition System performs cross-compensation internally,
providing a linearized, corrected digital output. Even with sophisticated electronics, the physical installation sets the system’s baseline crosstalk. Learn more in Controlling Crosstalk in Multi-Axis Force Measurement Systems.

DATA SHEET 101

Interface provides comprehensive product details through data sheets, categorizing specifications into four areas: Functional, Technical, Performance, and Design. These sheets serve as technical roadmaps, summarizing features, benefits, reference images, performance data, and outline drawings. The listed specifications help distinguish successful validation from system failure.

Examine the details in Interface Data Sheet 101 as we break down the 1200 LowProfile Data Sheet and provide six expert tips on how to master the datasheet, including capacity selection, fatigue factors, the whole-system view, thermal stabilization rule, calibration, and complete system considerations. Interface’s data helps you select the right products for your specific test and measurement projects and programs. Follow our 101 Series.

ARTICULATION AND CONTACT FORCE MEASUREMENT IN ROBOTS

The development of industrial robotics has progressed from inflexible, automatic tasks to adaptable, sensor-based interactions. While a robot’s primary structure provides the reach, the individual components at the points of contact and articulation determine the success of complex maneuvers. Traditionally, robot testing relied on a single load cell to measure vertical forces. Now, engineers use synchronized data from 3-axis and 6-axis sensors placed at every pivot and grip point to define articulation. Multi-axis sensors are
ideal for testing the structural anatomy of a robot, including its joints, end-effectors, and grippers. Dive deeper by reading Granular Dynamics of Robot Articulated Sensing.

MEASURING ESPORTS GAMING HARDWARE PERFORMANCE

The rise of esports has driven a change in testing standards, moving from simple functional checks to detailed mechanical analysis using sensor technologies. For today’s esports athletes, equipment must not only be dependable but also deliver a perfectly repeatable tactile response. As highlighted in Esports Are Transforming Fundamental Gaming Hardware Performance, the demands of esports on tournament infrastructure have also increased, leading to specialized testing of arena-scale setups to ensure that the same high level of precision found in handheld controllers is maintained in large, high-stakes environments. Check out our case study, Elevating Esports and Gaming Hardware and Venues.
