Selecting the right cable and connector is essential to the optimal performance of any measurement device. Unlike simple power or data transfer cables, force measurement cables and connectors are critical system components that ensure accurate data transmission from the sensor to the instrumentation.

Interface offers a wide range of standard and custom cable assemblies for seamless integration with our force measurement products. These cables are built with high-quality components to ensure accuracy and reliability. As highlighted in Load Cell Electrical Components, Connectors, and Wiring Standards, selecting the cable and connector is an important criterion when buying any measurement hardware.

TIP: Interface Cables and Connectors Brochure details sensor accessories for pairing with an instrument, whether using an Interface instrumentation device or another product you use to gather and analyze data.

CABLES AND CONNECTORS

Force measurement cables and connectors are far more integral than a cable. In precision force measurement, the electrical path between the transducer and the instrumentation is as critical to data integrity as the sensor itself. If cables, connectors, or terminal connections introduce electrical noise or resistance, the accuracy of the entire measurement chain is compromised. When choosing a cable, consider these key factors:

#1 – Length and Environment: Keep cables as short as possible to minimize signal loss. Ensure the cable is rated for the expected operating temperature range and consider waterproof options for wet environments.

#2 – Physical Characteristics: Select a cable with the appropriate flexibility for your installation. Stiffer cables offer more durability but can be harder to maneuver in tight spaces.

#3 – Signal Integrity: Shielded cables are essential in environments with electrical noise. Twisted pairs further improve noise rejection, especially in longer cables. Match the number of conductors to your load cell configuration (4-wire for basic setups, 6-wire for advanced measurements).

Interface Sensor Interconnect Cable Assemblies Guide provides wire harness information for connecting transducers with receptacles to Interface indicators and other instrumentation.

Interface Standard Cable Connectors available with our cables include:

PT06A-10-6S-SR 6-Pin Amphenol Bayonet Connector Female Sockets, Bayonet Lock, Aluminum Alloy
M12 5-Pin Binder Circular Connector Female Sockets 423 Series, Receptacle, Solder
M16 24-Pin Connector Male Socket, Non-Shield, Waterproof, IP67 Rating
DB9 9-Pin D-Sub Connector DB9 Male Plug Type, D-Sub Connector
770 8-Pin Binder Bayonet Connector Male Cable Connector Unshielded, Solder, IP67 Rating
DB44 44-Pin D-Sub High-Density Connector DB44 Male Plug Type, High-Density D-Sub Connectors

Mating Connectors are considered Interface accessories. They are also available in standard and custom Interface cable assemblies. Interface standard Mating Connector Models are MC-001, MC-002, CN-207, CN-208, and CN-214. They are designed to work with Interface products.

MINIATURE BEAM (MB) LOAD CELL INSTALLATION TIPS

The Interface MB Miniature Beam Load Cell (MB) is a high-performance, low-capacity miniature sensor engineered for precision and reliability in space-constrained environments. Interface Mini Beams, which are available in measurement capacities of 5 to 250 pounds force, are designed for controlled environment applications. In general, they can be used anywhere a readout instrument is available.

In Interface Miniature Beam Load Cells Installation Help, you will find step-by-step installation guidance, Interface technical resources, videos, and product information related to the MB product family, including our MB Miniature Beam Load Cell, MBI Overload Protected Miniature Beam Load Cell, and MBP Overload Protected Miniature Beam Load Cell.

Get quick links to our new videos that highlight typical attachment installs, preloaded spring overall protection, and platform scale mounts. Watch Anatomy of a Beam Load Cell to learn more about the intricate design features of the beam-style sensor, inside and out. Save this MB Installation article here.

NATURAL FREQUENCY 101

The term natural frequency is defined as the frequency at which a mechanical system oscillates when subjected to an initial excitation and allowed to vibrate freely without external damping. Every physical object exhibits this property. The primary operational constraint dictated by natural frequency is resonance. Resonance occurs when the frequency of an applied dynamic force matches the natural frequency of the measurement system. Determining whether the natural frequency constrains a test setup requires categorizing the application’s loading profile.

Accurate data acquisition from load cells depends on maintaining a clear separation between the application’s operating frequency and the physical test loop’s resonant frequency. Interface data sheets include the inherent natural frequency and deflection of load cells in the mechanical specification information. You can find natural frequencies for LowProfiles and some miniature load cells, including S-types and Mini Beams. Read Natural Frequency 101. Follow our 101 Series.

MEASURING DEAD, LIVE, AND TOTAL LOADS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

In civil engineering and architecture, understanding the forces acting on a structure is the difference between a lasting, safe building and a potential disaster. Load cells measure and validate forces during structural testing and in infrastructure design and monitoring. These forces are categorized into three fundamental types: dead load, live load, and total load. The dead load is the permanent, static, gravity-based load of the structure itself. It is the weight that does not change over time. The live load is the non-permanent, variable,
or transient force acting on a structure. It accounts for loads that can change in magnitude or position over time. The total load is the combined force a structure must safely resist over its life, including its dead load and the maximum expected live load. Engineers use a “Factored Load’—increasing these forces with safety margins to address uncertainties and overloads. Gain more insights in How Load Cells Reveal Dead, Live, and Total Loads in Civil Engineering.

TESTING THRILL RIDES & FOOD IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUMMERTIME FUN

Entertainment venues and theme parks rely on complex mechanical systems to create immersive guest experiences while meeting strict safety requirements. From roller coasters and motion platforms to automated stages and animatronic characters, engineers depend on precise measurements of force, torque, and weight to ensure attractions operate safely and reliably. Before food and beverage products reach the supermarket shelf, the neighborhood barbecue, or the beach cooler, they undergo rigorous testing in research and development kitchens. Food R&D relies heavily on force measurement to translate the subjective human experience of eating into repeatable, objective data.

Read these summertime favorites on Engineering Thrills Using Sensor Technologies for Theme Parks and Venues, including testing roller coasters, Ferris wheels, venue structures, and park attractions.
