A load cell can measure tension, compression, torsional, shear, moment, and other forces, making it invaluable for high-accuracy testing and measurement use cases across different industries.

Load cells are remarkable in their versatility. Each type has unique characteristics that determine its suitability for a particular application. For instance, a shear beam load cell might be ideal for a compact industrial scale, while a canister load cell is better suited for heavy-duty weighing applications. Choosing the wrong type can lead to inaccurate measurements, premature failure, or safety hazards.

TIP: Use the Interface Load Cell Selection Guide to review your options

Interface engineers and manufactures thousands of load cell models based on specific form factors, capacities, configurations, and measurement capabilities. The best place to learn about standard load cells is to understand the types most frequently used in force measurement. Read more about types of load cells.

INTERFACE TYPES OF LOAD CELLS

Understanding the diverse types of load cells is essential for selecting the right one for your application. Each type offers unique advantages and is suited for specific measurement requirements. The following details standard models and capacities for Interface’s most popular load cell types. You can see the range of options in this Interface Product Family video.

Pancake Load Cells (LowProfile®) are known for their low-profile design and can measure tension, compression, or both. Capacities of Interface load cells range from 1 to 2 million lbf. LowProfile load cells are ideal for precision measurement and performance applications. The 1200 Standard Precision LowProfile®
Load Cell
is Interface’s most popular load cell.
S-Type Load Cells are miniature load cells that handle tension and compression forces. Capacities range from 1 lbf to 10,000 lbf. The S-shape of the S-type load cell compact design offers flexibility. Load cells are preferred for machines, equipment, OEM products, and weighing systems.
Shear Beam Load Cells are another miniature option for tension and compression measurements. Capacities range from 2 to 10,000 lbf. Shear beam cells have a large hole bored partially through either side and offer stability for lateral forces.
Bending Beam and Double Bending Beam Load Cells feature a bending beam design, which makes them sensitive to tension and compression. Capacities range from 2 to 10,000 lbf. The double-bending beam variation enhances their load capacity, making them suitable for various low-capacity applications with limited space.
Canister and Column Load Cells are robust designs that can handle high capacities, making them ideal for heavy-duty and industrial applications. Column load cells are rugged constructions for harsh environments and precision testing. Capacities range from 50k to 1M lbf.
Rod End Load Cells are designed for compact applications, measuring tension and compression. The rod end load cell is small. Their versatility makes them popular in various industries, mainly when space is a premium. Capacities range from 1 to 200,000 lbf.

Load Button Load Cells provide precise measurements in a very compact form factor. Capacities range from 2 to 50,000 lbf. Load button load cell diameters range from 1 to 3 inches, with heights from 0.39 inches to 1.5 inches.

Load Pin Load Cells are specialized devices that can replace traditional pins in mechanical assemblies, measuring loads without additional space. Load pins have capacities from 200 kg to 3M lbf and offer IP65, IP66, IP67, and IP68 Ratings. They replace bolts, clevis, sheaves, equalizer pins, and load-bearing components to measure force.

Multi-Axis Load Cells (Sensors) are unique because they can simultaneously measure forces in multiple directions. These load cells can manage 2, 3, or even 6-axis measurements, making them suitable for applications requiring comprehensive force analysis, such as robotics and material testing. They minimize eccentric loading effects and crosstalk between axes. See our multi-axis sensor products for the range of capacity options.

Understanding load cell types is about knowing their applications and their inherent capabilities and limitations. Read Types of Load Cells 101. This knowledge empowers engineers and technicians to make informed decisions based on capacity, sensitivity, accuracy, and environmental conditions. Contact us to explore the type of load cell that works for your application.

RETROFITTING FACTORIES WITH PRECISION MEASUREMENT

The manufacturing landscape is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by automation and advancements in technology-driven tools and equipment. Sensors are helping in this transformation. With an estimated 10 million factories worldwide, many are experiencing varying levels of renovation driven by improving their tools, machines, and existing equipment to take advantage of the benefits related to Industry 4.0 and 5.0. Force, torque, and weight measurement solutions are crucial in factory retrofitting and modernization initiatives. By integrating these solutions, manufacturers can significantly improve their operations’ efficiency, productivity, safety, and sustainability. Read Retrofitting Factories with Measurement Solutions.

DEFINING LOAD CELL ERROR BUDGETS

An error budget quantifies every factor that can cause the load cell’s output to deviate from the actual weight or force being measured. A defined error budget is the maximum time a technical system can fail without service-level consequences. In force tests and measurements, it is sometimes called an uncertainty budget. An error budget involves identifying, quantifying, and combining individual error sources. This process often utilizes statistical methods to calculate the combined uncertainty. Learn about the factors used in error budgeting in How Do You Define A Load Cell Error Budget?

EXPLORING LOAD-BEARING LOAD SHACKLES

Interface load shackles are designed with robust, high-strength materials such as steel or aluminum to handle heavy loads while resisting corrosion and wear. They incorporate integrated strain gage load pin load cells that accurately convert tension forces into readable electronic signals, with Interface ensuring precise calibration for minimal error. These shackles are available in wired and wireless communication options, facilitating seamless integration into data acquisition systems or remote monitoring platforms. Additionally, load shackles feature overload protection, safeguarding the load cells from excessive forces to enhance safety and extend operational longevity, even in the most demanding
environments. Read Exploring Load Shackle Solutions

AUTOMOTIVE PERFORMANCE REQUIRES PRECISE TORQUE MEASUREMENT

As detailed Interface in the post The Future of Automotive Performance Requires Precise Torque Measurement, Interface torque transducers are indispensable design and testing tools in the automotive industry. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, these sensors will play an increasingly critical role in shaping the future of mobility. Interface
torque transducers offer exceptional accuracy, enabling engineers to gather reliable data for precise analysis and informed decision-making.

Torque sensors are built to withstand harsh automotive environments, ensuring consistent performance and longevity.
