Ashish Desai was born to be an engineer. He grew a fondness for tinkering with electronics and mechanical systems at a young age. His curiosity for the way things work pushed him to study various forms of engineering throughout his education.
Ash attended a STEM-focused high school known for its excellence in education in India where he studied electrical engineering. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mumbai and then earned a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Oklahoma.
With a love for engineering and his advanced education in the discipline, it eventually led him to the automotive industry where he worked on CAD/CAM systems at CADCAM-E.com. For the next 20 years of his career, Ash worked on a variety of software tools and instrumentation in different industries at market leading companies including National Instruments, Omega Engineering, and Flowserve Corporation. These experiences allowed Ash to gain a broad range of expertise in software and hardware engineering for industrial applications.
In 2017, Ash was introduced to Interface, Inc., through a friend and former co-worker. With the opportunity in sight, he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. He was a perfect fit for Interface as the Director of Product Strategy because the company was embarking on a new product strategy that called for an influx of innovative thinking to meet the growing force measurement solutions market.
“Amassing a great deal of experience using Interface products throughout my career, I was immediately interested in applying my expertise to developing new products and helping advance complex projects within Interface.” – Ashish Desai
In this position, one of Ash’s main responsibilities included developing custom solutions. Interface’s Custom Solutions Department works with some of the company’s most complex projects and requires a great deal of innovation. The types of projects he worked on included unique aerospace applications, as well as the development of a custom wireless load cell for a meat packing plant.
After just two years with Interface, Ash has been promoted to Director of Engineering and Technology. In his new position, he gained more responsibility to lead Interface’s product development. One of his very first projects became Interface’s most innovative products to-date, the AxialTQ. AxialTQ redefines the category of torque measurement systems in terms of function, accuracy customization, and compatibility. It is one of the Interface’s biggest product launches in its half-century history.
Ash credits much of the success of AxialTQ to his peers and the outstanding engineering teams. He takes a servant leadership approach to management and works hard to do what it takes to enable his team to continually generate new ideas that will improve customer solutions. He also makes a concerted effort to work directly with customers to ensure that their feedback is heavily considered in the product development process. In fact, many of the new features and benefits included in AxialTQ are in direct response to customer feedback.
When Ash isn’t helping to create the next big thing for Interface or leading a team of skilled engineers, he turns his attention towards his personal passion, music. He applies his engineering skills to his music and tinkers with audio-visual equipment to create the best listening experience. His favorite genres include classic rock and jazz, with a particular affinity for the music of the Beatles. But the personal activity that he values most is family time with his wife and daughter.
